Apple had announced at last week’s special event that the new third generation iPod Touch is up to 50% faster than the 2nd generation iPod Touch and includes support for OpenGL ES 2.0, which will improve performance, especially while playing iPhone games.
Macworld performed some basic speed tests on the 3rd generation iPod Touch to verify Apple’s claim.
Macworld observed that the new iPod Touch is noticeably faster at any task.
They observed that the new iPod Touch boots up in 19 seconds whereas the old iPod Touch used to take 31 seconds.
They found that the new iPod Touch launched iPhone games almost 33% to 50% faster than the old iPod Touch.
The new iPod Touch also loaded webpages in less than half the time taken by the old iPod Touch.
You can checkout the speed test results below:
So in short the speed test results were impressive and in line with Apple’s claim that the new iPod Touch is up to 50% faster than the 2nd generation iPod Touch.
TUAW has also confirmed that new iPod Touch contains a S5L8922X series processor which runs at 600 MHZ while the second generation contains a S5L8720X series processor, which runs at 532 MHz. The processor in the new iPod Touch is a slight numerical increment over the processor in the iPhone 3GS which has a S5L8920X processor, which also runs at 600 MHZ.
I think Apple has also doubled the RAM in the new iPod Touch i.e. 256MB up from 128MB just like they did in iPhone 3GS, which might have also helped in improving the performance.
Last year, the 2nd generation iPod Touch was noticeably faster than iPhone 3G, which should not be the case this year as the specifications of 3rd generation iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS are almost the same (if you consider the processor and RAM).
